Homo Ferus

solo project for The Essence 09,
anual exhibition of the University of Applied Arts Vienna

Vienna 2009
Fotoplot 1189 x 841

In the 80's the Soviet Union initiated an involutionary experiment in the Romanian Carpathian Mountains. The purpose of the experiment was to study the basic and oldest archetype of human behaviour, placed in a time where consciousness did not exist yet. Like this, under strong monitoring and in a self regulated system, wild humans were bred.

Monuments/indelible memories

with Tobias Egger & Markus Riedler

designforum, MuseumsQuartier, Vienna 2009
interactive installation 5000 x 3000 wood, stickers

There are not only many streets and squares bearing the names of individuals who are thus meant to receive a fixed place in our memories, but additionally there are numerous commemorative plaques, inscriptions and monuments in urban areas that are intented to remind us which events and individuals we once granted importance to, or still do.

Whoever destroys monuments destroys a society’s connection with its history. The Hague Convention was adopted in 1954 in order to protect cultural property from destruction or damage, as well as from theft, plunder, and other forms of illegal appropriation during a war or an armed conflict. Ever since then, cultural property has been marked with a special protective emblem.

With this in mind, public institutions decide in the public interest which objects should be regarded as cultural property. But what do you regard as indispensable? Visitors of the exhibition were given a sticker and were asked to choose their personal favorite.

Special thanks to Markus Hanzer

Auto Indulgentia

inspired by the indulgence trade in the late medieval eve, i designed a vending machine that pardons your sins in the name of god (the catholic church has not yet bought my patent). the confirmation comes as a card with Johann Tetzel's famous quote: "as soon as a coin in the coffer rings / the soul from purgatory springs" on one side and a field for the sins to be pardoned on the other side.
the whole process is "sub rosa", as in catholic for "confidential" and the engraving is burned into the woodboard.

Free Burqa Fashion

if more of us occidentals would wear burqas, fundamentalists would get bored and maybe even naked.

Workshopping

Urs Lehni & Stefan Marx held a two days Workshop to my class. The result was a 100 page fanzine printed in 50 copies hand-binded. I worked together with Leoni and what you see above is my part... something about dreams

Stiegl Braukunst 08

Every year the Salzburg beer brand Stiegl organizes this contest for art students to design labels for a special edition. These are my three proposals for the 2008 Born to be Wild edition.

Copy - Jamming

My first exhibition, a collective one, hosted by MAK Vienna... ESSENCE 08. BUSK and me presented a new concept called Copy - Jamming, this is what it is all about.

Nowadays advertising mingles more and more with the
private aspects of life.
Powerful corporations struggle to get our attention,
the advertiser is in a constant search of new means
and methods that bring to our advertence either
informative or emotional sales messages, with the
intention of motivating the buyer.
Copy-Jamming takes a critical position towards this
development, the spontaneous conquest of the private
estate.
The photocopy is destroyed through a process of
stamping brand names in a standardized pixel type and
printing them with the corresponding slogans. This
procedure eliminates the functional value of the copypaper.
The private estate is destroyed, the originator is
ambiguous and thus the subjet finds himself forced
to take a certain position.

What do you do when trapped between advertising and adbusting?

I'm not the only one in my familly who's got talent. after my father printed jimmy hendrix t-shirts and faked brand clothes in the 60's in communist romania, our turn comes to prevail in streetart.

drawing&exploring

Easter holiday in Timisoara, we found a couple more abandoned places that wait in silence to pe replaced by some trade center or shopping mall.

The fact that these buildings are lifeless and therefore invisible for the majority makes me draw, so that some other explorer finds traces of my vibe:)

My mother says that, back in the days, Timisoara used to have a flawless industry, massive export all over the world....now there is Kaufland instead of BegaPam,
Billa instead of the Milkfactory ánd soon to come, TenderTradeCenter instead of I.L.S.A. Our country starts to look more and more like an E.U.Corp. marketplace.

I was only 3 years old when democracy
got it's second chance, so I don't really have memories of what was before but get very nostalgic when I encounter something from the past, I meet the need to preserve as much as possible.

Explore your city, leave your vibe in lifeless places...Share it.
!!!

just finished this present for christina (sud tirol)...
...she throws a big party at her place this evening
and i thought this event deserves some attention.

ethics and aesthetics...

...is the result of my confrontation with graphic design and video at the same time. this was the task we got this semester and i chose a personal approach. worked for this clip about 2 months, building the set was the hard work. when it was ready i gott a bit frustrated because it was only 50sec long... then i was told that this is how it goes when working with stop motion...hundreds of photos going by in a minute.

busk took me on the streets one day and showed
me how it's done. i've had about 30 posters but
lost the first half while chasing the vienna-timisoara
train and the other i forgot in the train when i arrived
in bucharest from timisoara...so the only ones hanging
in the streets are in vienna.

drawings for last year

made these drawings on the way to revelion 2007.

From Heart to Hort

workshop with eike konig, last week in our class.
we watched 30min. of "dolls"
( takeshi kitano) and got
there our inspiration for the work we were about to do for
the next 2 days...we were free to do everything but avoid
working on the computer.

this is what came out

"you otaku?!" 'stalation and unique poster.
(plastic, paper and pebbles)

i borrowed the objects from a cheep-chinees-import-store in my
bezirk. the bubbles were part of the presentation and aftere that,
everybody was invited to take a pebble from the altar, betwen
the "hello kitty"'s.

eike did a good job, in 2 days, he managed to give a
pozitive impulse to 25 young students....the result of
that were photos,
instalations, illsutrations, typography,
stopmotion animation, colages, baloon sculptures
and fake passports.

how I got over here

I’m going to start posting the works I had in my mapa when I applied for university, they’ll come as I get along with digitizing them.

I couldn’t do all by my self, tudor helped me a lot…I thanked him already...and there where a lot of other people who helped me in one way or the other so I thank them all, and a BIG thank you to my parents…I know it sounds like a cliché but they are really grate, best parents one can wish for, so I can’t help it…I thank them for raising me how they did and hope to make them proud all the way!!!

The mapa consisted mainly of birthday presents for friends of mine....I thank them all for borrowing me the stuff and promise to give it back as soon as possible.

when everything was over we had to present our favorite work from the mapa, I dunno if this is my favorite but it's the one I choose.

We spent Wednesday evening talking about back home, looking through some magazines and enjoying...Eugenia

On Thursday we went walking and got to the Freiraum (MuseumsQuartier) wich was hosting a streetart Ausstellung...it was nice to see all the stuff in one place but indoor streetart is quite irritating, still, if you're around the block, check it out, it goes ‘till march 20.

On our way out we walked through the playFm lounge where we bumped into a rare show, I think…a guy was playing early records (’30-’40) on early pickups and we enjoyed it all through early loudspeakers…

sunny day out
